Assassin's Creed has always had a bad habit of making sequels that are similar to the previous installment. So is this going to be a true sequel? Or Assassin's creed 2.75? Without further delay let's dive right into Assassin's Creed Revelations.
Gameplay: The gameplay of Assassin's Creed Revelations is the same as it has always been. Counter the enemies moves to kill them and continue the combo for mass murder while also occasionally using Ezio's various assortment of gadgets to help you out in combat. One of the newly introduced gadgets are bombs. While bombs don't exactly sound like something a sneaky Assassin would use there are three different kind of bombs. There's the lethal bomb which kills, the tactical bomb which stuns targets so you can finish them of yourself and theres distraction bombs which as their titles would imply distract targets. However i almost never used the bombs except the distraction bombs for some of the stealth missions. The reason behind this is that it takes way to long time to find ingredients and make your own custom bombs while it is a whole lot easier just to plow the enemies with your sword. In Assassin's Creed Revelations Ezio receives a upgrade to his regular hidden blade and gets instead a hookblade. The hook blade works exactly like the hidden blade for assassinations but also gives Ezio better climbing abilities as the hookblade works as an extended arm. The hookblade can also be used in combat as you can vault over or throw enemies with it which i found myself doing to roof guards very very often. You can also capture different locations so that you can renovate shops there. However there is now a catch, Templars will occasionally attack your fortification and you have to go and defend the settlement. The way you defend the Assassin den is though an awkward tower defense mini game. The tower defense seems fine at first making you think there really were some new things. However after a while things get very repetitive and the mini game becomes more of a chore than a fun activity. Throughout Konstantinopel Ezio will find data fragments. These fragments unlock levels to play as the much ignored Desmond Miles as he goes through the animus telling his story. Surprisingly i enjoyed this side-activity very much which is strange considering i hate puzzels in gaming. In this mini game you have to traverse locations filled with obstacles you avoid them by creating blocks as you uncover more about Desmond's past. The enemies of the game are change from being complete weaklings to someone you might have to shoot three times with the hidden gun. While i enjoy a good challenge it is annoying to stop the flow of combat just because a guard wears more ridiculous clothes than others. Ubisoft returns with multiplayer and it is very fun. The thing that makes it fun is that it's not generic at all and you get massive scores if you kill your enemy quietly. I enjoyed the multiplayer and it's unlockables even do it doesn't outshine the single-player.
Gameplay score:9
Graphics: While the graphics haven't changed much from brotherhood considering Ubisoft decided to use practically the same engine. The environments have changed quite a lot as we travel form the beautiful city of Rome to the dusty Constantinople more commonly known as Istanbul. While i really appreciate the change and the world is bigger and better than ever. I have to admit that i think that Rome was a lot more beautiful from a design perspective considering Constantinople is dirty and dusty. The graphics of Assassin's creed actually look pretty bad considering it was made by a triple a company but they aren't completely bad.
Graphics score:6
Story: The story as the name would make you believe ties up all the loose ends of the games letting you both play as Ezio and Altaïr in their later years. However don't get me wrong the story of Assassin's Creed Revelations is as confusing as ever as no matter how many times i surfed the Assassin's Creed wikia i could still barely understand what was going on. Surprisingly the multiplayer gets a story of it's own as you level up. The story is basically a 3 minute cutscene every ten levels and isn't anything spectacular or even mediocre for that matter. In Desmonds side-missions i actually enjoyed the story very much as i got to know more about the forgotten protagonist.
Story score:7
Sound: The sounds of Assassin's creed really is nothing spectacular as i barely noticed any sword swings or gun shots. However the sounds do what they must and convince the player that they are in the world of Assassin's Creed even do it is mediocre. The music on the other hand is spectacular and the fact that it's muted most of the time really sets the tension of you being a master Assassin. Also let's not forget the fact that i would gladly hear the sound you get when you do an aerial assassination a hundred times over again.
Sound score:8
Verdict: This is Assassin's Creed 2.75...Now go get it!
Total score:8.8
